Gallery Learning Experiences

For the past few years visitors to Image City Photography Gallery have encouraged us to provide learning experiences to enhance their understanding of photographic techniques or photo editing tools. We are proud to announce our first series of Gallery Learning Experiences. The feedback we get from this first time adventure will help us define future course offerings. There is no mail-in or online registration. Please visit the Gallery to sign up for courses. We accept checks, cash, or credit cards.

Adobe Lightroom (Course)
Instructor:  Steve Levinson
Dates:  Wednesdays, October 5,12,19 and 26
Time:  7:00-9:00 p.m.
Location:
Pittsford Flour Mill, 15 Schoen Place, Pittsford
Fee:  $165 (max 8 participants)

With the advent of digital photography, it is easy to find yourself spending more of your time in learning complex imaging software than in the creative steps of taking images and making them look as good as possible.  After taking this lecture and workshop course, you will be have an efficient workflow (or standardized process) that you can follow; from importing the images you take into your computer to a finished print. Lightroom is a wonderful product that allows you both to intuitively and easily:

  •  Import your images from your camera

  • Select the best images

  • Optimize these images, both technically and creatively

  • Output these images to a printer or other uses

Participants should be familiar with the basics of digital cameras, photography and transferring files to your computer.  They will also need to have or borrow a laptop computer (apple or PC) for the course.  Software is available from Adobe on a free, one-month trial. (Please do not download this software until the day before the course, so that it will be available for the four sessions.)

Cell Phone Photography (Workshop Series)

Instructor:  Gil Maker
Dates: October 15, 2011
Time:  9:00 am till 11:00 am
Location: Image City Photography Gallery
Fee: $15

These days’ digital cameras are found in a variety of other gadgets – including cell phones. In fact Camera Phones are one of the fastest growing segments of the digital camera market. Unfortunately many of the pictures being taken with Camera Phones are poor in quality. This might partially be a result of lower quality cameras – but it is also often a result of poor photographic technique.  This class will cover techniques for improving cell phone images.  We try them out by going out and shooting and then discuss processing images using apps made for cell phones.

Layers & Masks (Workshop Series)

Instructor:  Don Menges
Date:  Saturday, October 22, 2011
Time:  9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Location:  Image City Photography Gallery
Fee: $20 (5-15 participants)

Layers and Layer Masks are, without a doubt, the single most important aspects of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, yet many people struggle to comprehend what they are or how they work. This workshop is not a hands-on training. Rather it is an introduction to what layers are and basically how they work. I will demonstrate some simple uses of layers and layer masks with Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements 8. The process is exactly the same with newer versions of these software titles. You will leave with a solid understanding of these tools.

What is HDR Photography? (Workshop Series)

Instructor:  Don Menges
Date:  Saturday, November 5, 2011
Time:  9:00-11:00 a.m.
Location:  Image City Photography Gallery
Fee: $20 (5-15 participants)

Carefully used, high dynamic range photography will give the photographer more dynamic range when it is impossible to capture it with a single image. I find the process interesting to use even when the light does not demand multiple exposures. In this workshop I will demonstrate my workflow so you can see how an HDR image is captured and edited. If time permits we also look at getting the HDR effect with a single image using Topaz Adjust.

Black and White Photography (Workshop Series)

Instructor:  Gil Maker
Dates: November 19, 2011
Time:  9:00 am till 11:00 am
Location: Image City Photography Gallery
Fee: $35 (limit 10 people)

This class is an introduction to black and white photography.  The class will cover; What to look for in a black and white image; The connection between color and black and white; What tools to use for converting your color images into Black and White (Lightroom and Nik Software Silver FX will be used for this demonstration, but the ideas can be used in Photoshop and Aperture.)

This class is a demonstration, so the participants will need no computers.  Handouts with the notes and software used will be included.

Hands On HDR (Field Trip)
Instructor:  Carl Crumley
Date:  Saturday, November 26, 2011
Time:  9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (later if needed)
Location:
Pittsford Flour Mill, 15 Schoen Place, Pittsford and St. Paul's Church
Fee: $50 (max 8 participants)

In this one-day field trip we'll meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Pittsford Flour Mill. Inside we'll see images displayed on the wall demonstrating the results that can be obtained with HDRI (High Dynamic Range Imaging). There will be a briefing on HDRI capture techniques and a last minute equipment check.

Then, we're off to the beautiful and historic St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsford. Bright, colorful light comes through the stained glass windows, shining down on the dark, rich wooden floor and pews. We'll take a couple of hours to be sure everyone gets a card full of data that can be used later to build your own HDR images and edit them at your leisure.

After a stop at the Coal Tower Restaurant for lunch, we'll head back into the Flour Mill to watch a demonstration using several different HDR programs with images captured during our time at the church. There will be plenty of time to ask questions and learn all you need to know to produce incredible images when you get back home. Feel free to bring along your own laptop and do some editing right on the spot if you'd like, or just sit back and absorb the instruction.
